THANKS-giving

Updated: Nov 23, 2022

Well, today is THAT DAY….or is it?

As I sit here deep breathing, for reasons more than I would like, my thoughts are a bit troubled.

Traditional Thanksgiving is now upon us and yet, nothing seems traditional.  More than that, even fewer people are giving thanks.  I wonder with the vacant seats, hurting homes, burdened lives, and heavy hearts, what do we have to be thankful for?!

With that question, the good ‘ol me explored the inevitable, bad-boy, Google for an answer. In that search, I found this quote that I thought I’d share:

“Thanksgiving is an emotional holiday. People travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year and then discover once a year is way too often.” -Johnny Carson

Okay, so first of all, humor is a tool to resilience ;-).

Secondly, the suddenly, offensive, quote for 2020, really made me think:

if this holiday was the same as always, to what would I be thankful for?  Or would I be traditionally frustrated with the pressure, busyness, hurry, and headaches of it all?

I don’t know.

What I do know is that having to have quarantined or socially-distant holidays sucks! I also know that I could be a holiday-hardheaded-downer no matter how it had panned out. Johnny Carson indirectly challenged my perspective and my choice of reaction to the “different” holiday this year.

Because in all this knowledge, I also know taking time of solitude, reflection, and self-stewardship is powerful.  I encourage those I love to take that often.   Maybe this Thanksgiving can be time for me to simmer in thanks for myself and closest loves, my past growths, and my future plans.

Me.

Us, in the home.

Time.

Solitude.

Weird words!

Yet, this is THAT DAY which I am, awkwardly, uncomfortably, joyfully, thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
